CELL PHONES FOR LIFE

Deactivated cell phones are provided to community members so they are able to call 9-1-1 in case of emergency. In 2008, 225 phones were donated and VIPS distributed 23 to Town citizens.  About 100 phones are kept on hand and the rest are given to the Lions Club. The phones are free of charge; just fill out a request form which can be obtained at the lobby window at the Paradise Police Department. Questions can be answered by calling 872-6314.

VACATION HOUSE CHECKS

Residents of Paradise can make arrangements with volunteers to have their homes checked while they are on vacation. The VIPS walk the outside premises as part of their patrol duties, checking for unlocked doors, open windows, or anything that looks awry. An applicant must apply in person at the Paradise Police Department, and at least two weeks prior to the requested period. The service is free of charge.

CHILD SEAT SAFETY CHECKS
VIPS are certified to assist in child car seat installation.   Child seat checkups provide parents and caregivers with the opportunity to have their child's restraint checked by a nationally certified child passenger safety technician or instructor to determine if it is safe and being used correctly.  The service is provided free-of-charge as a public service through child seat inspection stations and checkup events. Call 872-6314 for more information.

IDENT-A-CHILD
The Ident-A-Child program is a free service designed to assist parents, the media, and law enforcement in the event a child should ever become lost or missing. A digital camera is now used to record images of the children. After careful verification, the data is transferred to a CD which is stored at the Police Department for future reference if necessary.  DNA is obtained and stored in swab kits, which are retained by the parents. During the past year, 25 volunteers have participated in registering children at special events in Paradise such as Johnny Appleseed Days, Gold Nugget Days, Feather River Health Fair and the Community Family Safety Festival. For additional information, call 872-6314

DEPARTMENT TOURS
VIPS coordinate tours of the Police Department for children or other special groups (e.g.,adults with handicaps.) Requests for such tours frequently come from elementary, home or charter school teachers as well as family groups.  Tours involve many aspect of the daily routine of the Paradise Police Department. Fingerprinting, the 9-1-1 Communications Center, interaction with the officers and the functions of a patrol vehicle are some of the interesting aspects of a department tour. To schedule a tour, an Events Request form should be completed and turned into the Police Department at least 30 days prior to event date.  Forms are located at the Paradise Police Department.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
Members of a neighborhood who wish to organize to help reduce crime potential in their area can call the VIPS. A member soon arranges to meet with the group to assist them. Neighborhood Watch members maintain contact with each other to discuss their concerns. They obtain Neighborhood Watch signs, and are counseled by the VIPS to remedy criminal opportunity. Their group information is passed to the VIPS Patrol Unit, who then cruise the area daily or as often as possible. To organize a Neighborhood Watch, contact Charlie Rollo, Community Service Officer at 872-6221.

REFLECTIVE SIGNS
Too often emergency response to a resident's home is hampered for lack of clearly marked house number signs.  To better protect loved ones and self, residents can purchase reflective address signs from the volunteers at a low cost.  The request forms can be obtained at the lobby window of the police department.  For more information, call 872-6314.
