Once fully established, it will be responsible for the recording of the Town’s infrastructure through a Geographical Information System (GIS). GIS enables the user to envision the geographic aspects of a body of data. Basically, it lets you query or analyze a database and receive the results in the form of some kind of map. Since many kinds of data have important geographic aspects, a GIS can have many uses: weather forecasting, sales analysis, population forecasting, land use planning, scientific investigations, resource management, and development planning. GIS is can also be described by an example. The Town has digital maps created from aerial photography and also has information on traffic accident history. GIS software and hardware can link the map to the accident data so there would a visual presentation of the accident sites (marked by some symbol) as well as available data associated to the individual accident sites. Certain information can also be queried and displayed. For example, you could ask the program to show you the location of all DUI’s within the Town or all pedestrian involved accidents. This filtering technique will allow for improved record keeping and tools for mitigation by revealing trends or patterns.
