Beginning approximately 05/08/2024, a red and white GMC or Chevrolet Pickup has been associated with multiple thefts throughout Paradise and surrounding areas of Butte County. The suspect(s) MO was to cut locks associated with local Propane Tank cages and steal full propane tanks, or drill fuel tanks of parked vehicles, subsequently draining them of gasoline. Since early May, the vehicle was observed on video surveillance fleeing the areas where the crimes occurred.

 

On 06/04/2024 night shift patrol officers spent time looking for a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle as the typical hours the thefts occurred were in the early morning between 0200 and 0400 hours.

 

Officers Wood and Tuck located a vehicle matching the description parked in a parking lot at 5837 Clark Road at approximately 0334 hours. The vehicle was occupied by two subjects. The subjects were identified as 43-year-old Ben Simmons, and 40-year-old Melissa Carney, both residents of Magalia.

 

During the investigation, officers located multiple power drills with large bits, cutting tools, fuel cans, siphon hose and a catch can believed to be used for the theft of gasoline. Further officers located suspected methamphetamine and multiple items of paraphernalia. Officer also located a small drone which was believed to have been utilized for surveillance during the commission of the crimes.

 

A Records check revealed Simmons to have a non-citeable warrant from Sutter County for evasion. Simmons was taken into custody for the warrant as well as suspected possession of burglary tools, possession of methamphetamine and controlled substance paraphernalia.

 

Carney was taken into custody for possession of methamphetamine and possession of controlled substance paraphernalia. Both suspects were later booked into the Butte County Jail for the above violations.
