PRESS RELEASE- 2/24/23- ROAD CONDITIONS FOR NIGHT OF FEBRUARY 24 THROUGH MORNING OF FEBRUARY 25

FOG:   The snowfall has stopped and the majority of the main roads are plowed. A misty rain has brought about patches of dense fog that significantly impair visibility for drivers. The weight of snow has broken numerous tree branches, some of which are falling into the roads. When driving in fog, be sure to have your headlights on and drive slow enough to be able to react to hazards in the road. As with snow driving, driving in dense fog is a situation in which the posted speed limit may be higher than the safe speed. California law requires drivers to exercise caution and lower their speed to match roadway conditions even if the posted speed limit allows for greater speed (22350 VC). California law also says that if traffic signals are out due to power outage, intersections default to 4-way stop (21800(d) VC).

 

ICE:    Though the roads are plowed, snow is still blocking the gutters and storm drains, leaving the roads very wet. In some low spots, roads may have standing water. Temperatures are expected to drop overnight, which will likely turn wet roads into icy roads. Though chains are not required now that the roads are plowed, you must carry chains with you if you do not have four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and snow tires or all terrain tires. Due to the expected icy, foggy roads, driving after midnight is not recommended.

 

Driver Safety Tips from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:

Before driving:

  • Check your local weather forecast
  • Check your tire pressure, tire tread, and vehicle lighting
  • Check your windshield wipers and windshield defroster
  • Keep a full tank of gas and bring tire chains, a good flashlight, and a shovel
  • Stock your vehicle with food, water, warm gloves and blankets in case you get stuck
  • Be prepared to use a different route if your normal route is blocked or impassable

 

While driving:

  • Give yourself more time and space to react to vehicles or hazards in the road.
  • Give yourself more time to get to your destination than normal
  • Do not pass or follow closely behind or beside snow plows
  • If you have to stop in the road be sure to use hazard lights to increase your visibility
  • Use your headlights to increase visibility and wear your seat belt

NEBLINA: La nieve ha cesado y la mayoría de las carreteras principales están limpias. Una lluvia neblinosa ha causado parches de neblina densa que perjudican significamente la visibilidad de los conductores. El peso de la nieve ha rotado muchas ramas de árboles , algunas de las ramas están cayendo a las carreteras. Cuando conduzca en la neblina, asegúrese de tener las luces delantes encendidas y conduzca lo suficientemente lento para poder reaccionar imediatamente. La conducción en la nieve y en neblina densa son situaciones en la que el límite de velocidad indicado puede ser mayor que la velocidad segura. La ley de California requiere que los conductores tenga cuidado y reduzcan la velocidad para adaptarse a las condiciones de la carretera, incluso si el límite de velocidad publicada permite una mayor velocidad (22350 VC). La ley de California también dice que si los semáforos no funcionan debido un corte de energía, las intersecciones se detendrán de forma predeterminada en 4 direcciones (21800(d) VC).

Antes de conducir:

Verifique la presión de sus llantas, y la banda de rodadura de las llantas y la iluminación del vehículo. 

Revise sus limpia parabrisas y desongelador de parabrisas. 

Mantenga un tanque lleno de gasolina y traiga cadenas de llantas, una buena linterna y una pala. 

Aprovisionar su vehículo con comida, agua, guantes y cobijas en caso de que se queda atascado. 

Éste preparado para usar una ruta diferente si su ruta normal está bloqueado o es intransitable. 

 

Mientras conduciendo:

Dese más tiempo y espacio para reaccionar antes de peligros en la carretera.

Dese más tiempo para llegar a su destino de lo normal. 

No pase ni siga de cerca detrás o a lado de las máquinas quitanieves. 

Si tiene que detenerse en la carretera, asegúrese de usar las luces de emergencias para aumentar su visibilidad. 

Use sus luces para aumentar la visibilidad y use su cinturón de seguridad.
