PRESS RELEASE- Juvenile Struck Within Crosswalk

On 11/17/2023, at approximately 1500 hours, Paradise Police Officers were dispatched to the report of a traffic collision involving vehicle and a juvenile pedestrian on Skyway near Terry Ashe Park. The reporting parties stated the juvenile had been struck while using the crosswalk, but was awake and talking.

Officers arrived and located the involved vehicle, a silver Hyundai Santa Fe which was driven by a senior Paradise resident. Witnesses informed officers the female juvenile had utilized the amber lighted crosswalk, and all warning lights were functioning. The juvenile was riding an electric scooter within the lighted crosswalk at the time of the collision.

The driver stated she did not see the warning lights or the juvenile prior to the collision. The juvenile suffered moderate injuries and was transported via ambulance to a local hospital. At the conclusion of the investigation, the driver was cited for 21950(a) CVC, failure to yield at a crosswalk, and the Paradise Police Department sent a re-exam request for the driver to DMV.

At the time of this release, the juvenile's family states she is doing well in her recovery, is in good spirits, and hopes to be able to go home soon.

The Paradise Police Department would like to extend thanks to the citizens who provided immediate care for the juvenile and controlled traffic prior to Officers arrival. Although it was clear weather at the time of this accident, as we are enter the winter season it is even more critical that drivers follow speed limits and remain alert for pedestrians. We would also like to remind cyclists and scooter riders of the importance of wearing a helmet while riding.
